THE VERKHOVYNA QUARTET was formed fifteen years ago in Toronto under the musical direction of Olena Hlibovych with the initial sponsor- ship of W. Sharvan. The first touring group consisted of N. Lysaniuk, M. Brezden, H. Pidruchny, T. Kossatch and the accompanist S. Zovnir-
Klos. From 1955, VERKHOVYNA toured Eastern Canada and the United States as an independent group, presenting Ukrainian songs not only to Ukrainian audiences but to the public at large. The Quartet met with instant success and is now one of the most popular Ukrainian vocal groups
beyond the borders of the Ukraine: its popularity became more firmly established after its extensive concert tours, radio and television appear- ances, and film productions. VERKHOVYNAS repertoire is extensive and varied-simple folk melodies, lyrical songs, religious and classical works of
Ukrainian composers as well as the classics and light classics of the western world.

Over the years, Ukrainian music critics such as Messrs. Bamych, Stavnychy, Fedoriv and others have acclaimed the Quartet for their unique blending of voices, faultless diction, even tone and originality of interpre- tation

VERKHOVYNA'S participation in the 1956 Shakespearean Stratford Music Festival drew the following remarks from the critics -
- gay lilt to these voices but also an underlining tone control and harmony that is delightful
George Kidd, Toronto Telegram
- there were some lovely examples of harmonizing
John Kraglund, Globe and Mail
- sung with charm and lovely harmony
Marcus Adeny, Toronto Daily Star
The past fifteen years have also seen a change in the personnel of the Quartet but the enthusiasm and the competence of the new members has perpetuated the high standards set by the previous group. The singers heard on this record have sung together since the 1965-66 season. Arrangements have been completed for further concert tours and recordings.
